style her own: alyssa of random acts of pastel

Alyssa's own magical blog random acts of pastel, gives the absolute perfect description of her  I'm Alyssa, a professional dreamer with ever-changing pastel hair. Surviving on a diet of mainly sugar, I delight in sparkly surprises and rarely remove my rose-tinted glasses. So come, gallop through the glitter with me.".  somehow came across Alyssa, through her instagram, which lead me to discover that i've been a fan of alyssa w/out even realizing (duh!?) she was the star in this particular favorite worn video & her voice is behind so many amazing articles & interviews on worn, including worn #17 (one of the best issues, i feel, so far!).

Name, age & where are you living right now?
Hello! I’m Alyssa Garrison, I’m currently 23 going on 24, and I live in Toronto (Though I’m originally a west coast girl)

How are you today?
I’m quite lovely. I love all of the seasons, but cozy winter is by far my favourite, so I’m happiest when the weather is chilly.

what was your 13 year old self wearing?
As mentioned above, I grew up in Vancouver, the birthplace of Aritzia. It just so happened that the highest peak in popularity of Aritzia’s TNA spandex tracksuit happened right about the time I turned 13. Every girl in Vancouver had one; I was so desperate to be cool at high school that I bought 3. I paired the tracksuits with spaghetti strap tank tops and skater shoes. My favourite suit of the three was baby pink (of course.)

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
Well she’ll have pastel hair, that’s for sure! I can’t wait till my hair goes white, it will make pastel colours so much easier to maintain. I think at 50 I’ll probably wear a lot of silk and knitwear, layered around my body like onion skins. I hope to look like I’m always wearing very classy pajamas and blankets wrapped around my body. But I’ll always accessorize with glamorous glittery shoes.

how important is individual style to you?
Extremely. I think style speaks pages to someone before you even open your mouth. Even people who deliberately don’t care about what they wear are making an “I don’t care” statement. I try to convey a sense of magic through my style, mixing pastels and glitter/shiny/knitted textures to create a sort of ethereal wonderland around my body.

What inspires what you wear?
Treats! Unicorns! The wild unknown! I’m a dreamer, and what I wear is a reflection of the magical world that I have imagined and built for myself.

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
Good, soft plain white t-shirts, my Acne jeans (I pretty much have every colour at this point), hair accessories and pastel socks, especially cute printed ones. I love to dress a little out there, but basics always form the base of my outfits.

what are you obsessed with right now?

Big chunky knits! All I want to do is cuddle up into endless piles of soft yarn. I’m also really into pink, but that’s all the time, and covering my paws in tons of tiny precious gold rings. Oh and Deborah Lippmann sparkle nail polish of course: she is the master of glitter!

style her own: elodie aka lady moriarty

the most modern exquisite mix of vintage & new, with Paris as her backdrop, Elodie is truly a huge inspiration to me, effortlessly stunning, with a beautiful smile in her photos, that tells you style is all about uplifting you. it has been a bit since i have posted for the style her own series, & i know that elodie aka lady Moriarty is the perfect lady to start anew, also she will help me kick off a new post for another too forgotten series of knits X bloggers series, i am so anxious & excited to see how she mixes the good night day knits, coming soon.
I am smitten & crushing on this lady, & to elodie merci beaucoup for answering my questions &
for allowing me to do this post! all photos c/o lady moriarty

name, age & where are you living right now?
So I'm Elodie, I'm 32 and I live in Paris.
how are you today?
I'm ok today, like almost every day !
what was your 13 year old self wearing?
Oh my, at 13 I was basically trying to be invisible, I wasn't pretty or popular, so it was jean-jumper and very sad normal shoes. And awful glasses !
what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
At 50, I will be dressed as a modern version of Marlene Dietrich or Katharine Hepburn
how important is individual style to you?
Individual style is really important, you have to be yourself, even if yourself is looking like Miley Cyrus, if you're comfortable with a micro skirt, it´s ok ^^
what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
Coats, coat and coats again. And I'm still looking for the perfect Vintage trench !
what are you obsessed with right now?
My cats ha ha, I have a tiny new little kitten and he's the funniest. And perfect derbies or Oxford shoes.

style her own: crystal lee/naked cowgirl (part two)

it was an impossible task for anyone, so indeed this is part two of style her own post for crystal lee,  & can you believe there is still so much more beauty, inspiration & creativity to last for days at her blog & flickr... every photo could be a film still, a gallery shot, a editorial, from life archives or a distant & enigmatic, mysterious relative that is still talked about with reverence & intrigue... from another time...please check out the first post here.

name, age & where are you living right now?
Crystal Lee, 32, Long Beach, CA
how are you today?
Happy. Any day I am alive and healthy, I try to be grateful.

what was your 13 year old self wearing?I went through a lot of “fashion” phases at this age.  You’d often find me in some oddly paired clothing combinations like a 90s floral bandage dress with birkenstocks and socks (Yikes!) or some baggy pants with a body suit worn over a big padded bra and a Malcom X hat with a pony tail going through the hole in my cap. Probably the most adventurous outfit I wore was colorful dashiki pants set with a matching cap, bought by my dad, brought all the way from Africa on one of his mission trips. Also, I wore clothing from my mom’s closet and clothing ( often a flannel or an oversized skateboarding shirt) stolen from my boy friends.

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
Only time will tell, but I hope something cheerful.

how important is individual style to you?
Very important. Life is short and I want to be able to express myself in different ways.  Style is one very fun way to express my life philosophy.

what inspires what you wear?
Most of the time, I’m inspired by an inner feeling of gaiety and an appreciation for life.
I want my outfits to be upbeat. I want them to exude adventure, which is why I dress like a cowgirl a lot of the time, especially when I’m on a road trip. But I’m also inspired by fun stuff like vintage Versace and Moschino, vintage skate wear like Vision Street Wear & Jimmy Z, and then formidable types like cowgirls, tough chicks, The Teds, Kelly Bundy, Tracy Lords (Wanda Woodward)  in Crybaby.

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
I guess shoes and socks because they get a lot of wear. I have so much vintage clothing so I don’t usually have to replace any wardrobe pieces.

what are you obsessed with right now?
As far as clothing goes I’m obsessed with: suspenders, western bow ties, wool shorts, pop art prints, cigarette pants, turn of the century undergarments, mohair, 50s wiggle dresses and suits or vintage matching sets. As far as learning, living and loving goes, I’m obsessed with square dancing, flat foot dancing, taking film photos, listening to Steve Earle, talking walks and drinking wine in the evenings, hanging with my boyfriend, my niece & new nephew.

style her own: jenny

jenny is a classic knock out & while in montreal, i finally met jenny at izzy's birthday party at citizen vintage, (where i met so many wonderful ladies), & i think i got ripped off because i never really got to drink & talk enough with her. now that this red headed beauty is back in toronto maybe i'ii get that chance sooner than later. also, check out the post from the fabulous worn blog on jenny!

name, age & where are you living right now?
Hey Tara-Lynn, thanks so much for featuring me. I’m Jenny, 21 years old and I live in Montreal. In September I’m moving back to Toronto though!

how are you today?
Today I’m dreaming about an unemployed summer in Montreal. I’ve already given my notice (where I work as a line cook) so it’s a comin.

What would your 13-year-old self be wearing?
I was very conventional at 13 so I’d like to go back in time and scare people. And get back all the money I spent at Aritzia.

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
I’ll be dressed like the women on advanced style, I hope!

How important is individual style to you?
It’s a constant goal of mine. But I find individual style hard to attain - my tastes are constantly changing. Or I want my individual style to be like someone else, and that’s not very individual at all!

What inspires what you wear?
Whatever’s free.

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
I’m planning to replace all my bras this summer – its time to perk up!

what are you obsessed with right now?
Country line dancing, junk shops, vintage barware, Betty Drapers dresses and fashion blogs forever (I think Else Billgren is perfect) I’m currently wearing a rotation of gingham crop tops and Levis cut offs and am on the lookout for colorful vintage dresses this summer!

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
hopefully classic and timeless pieces mixed with some flare.

how important is individual style to you?
it's everything! i like to think style is a way to represent yourself without saying a word, which works for me because i'm pretty shy.

style her own: april of white apple

what an enormous pleasure to scour april's Flickr stream (i'm a long time follower) & not just for these stylish ingenious outfit posts (out of this world, by the way), but also for the chance to be nosing around & look into her creative life. what a joy! you can also check out april's blog, & her white apple shop on etsy.
name, age & where are you living right now?
all photos & illustration c/o april leino

My name is April Leino.
I will officially be an overgrown child of 36 years in August. My parents still ask me on a regular basis when I will finally grow up. I still have no answer for them.
I am currently living amongst an unholy amount of boxes and bags of stuff in my new apartment in Vancouver BC. We've only just moved one floor up, but it took us five whole days to get everything up here... truth be told, there's still some stuff downstairs but I'm pretending that I don't know about it!

how are you today?
I believe that I'm suffering from a bit of the general malaise and angst that comes along with a mid-life crisis! So, not very good :(

what would your 13 year old self be wearing?
Thirteen year old April wore some really unfortunate outfits that combined my two main interests in life at the time: hair-rock and skater boys. I wore a lot of acid wash denim, tight jeans, tiered ruffle skirts, Chuck Taylor hightops (sometimes two different colours), oversized sweaters and purple... lots and lots of purple! I can't even look at that colour without cringing now! Oh, and obviously, I had a perm! With big teased bangs. Obviously. It was 1988! Oh! I just remembered my "Debbie Gibson" hat!
People made fun of me.

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?
Who knows! I have recently learned that within fourteen years the world will have depleted it's fresh water and we will be living in a desert environment complete with fire-tornados! I am NOT looking forward to those fire tornados! I imagine that some sort of protective suit will be required for going outside (I think I'll get a gold one, if I can), so when I am indoors I will go all out! I imagine a lot of sixties style psychedelic pantsuits in my future.

how important is individual style to you?
It's always been important to me. Whether we like it or not, what we wear sends unspoken messages to those around us and that in itself is important. Besides the obvious cultural significance of fashion, it is also immensely fun! I've always used fashion as an outlet for my creativity. Dressing up and creating a character is just the most fun I can think of.

what inspires what you wear?
Everything! The weather, movies, music, art, objects, plants, animals, walking outside, seeing what other people are doing and then trying to interpret all of these things in clothing. I used to be a lot more creative with my clothes; I mostly dress for work and getting dirty now :(

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
If we're talking about items that physically break down so that I have to replace them, that would be my everyday walking shoes. I can walk a hole right through the soles of Chuck Taylors in exactly four months. That's a pathetically short life for shoes.
If we're talking about things that I unconsciously collect, that would be wool skirts and cardigans. Because I just unpacked, I can tell you that I own twenty four wool skirts and forty one cardigans! Yikes!!!

what are you obsessed with right now?
Fire tornados, Scott Pilgrim VS The World, wanting to move back to Ontario, and disco platforms.
