q&a winter 2015 / from peppermint magazine

What’s the story behind your label?
Good Night, Day is a small independently run knitwear label, with an aesthetic
that emphasizes sustainability, ,incorporates traditional hand knitting skills with a modern & minimalist approach. The limited items are handcrafted in small exclusive batches, all out of Canada using  fairly  sourced South American wools.

When did you learn to knit, and what do you love about it?
I taught myself to knit as a way to channel my creativity, it was an immediate obsession. I love the empowerment that came with learning a traditional hands on skill. Knitting is really artistically & politically liberating for me.

What inspires your modern and minimalist designs?
I am deeply & personally invested in my designs, since each piece is hand knit, it all comes from that. I have a strong aesthetic for minimalism, so shape & structure is inspiring . I am also so inspired with textures, fibres, & colour palettes, also obviously a certain mood & emotion.

How do you source the wool used for each collection?
I am strongly drawn to textures that naturally hand spun fibres produce  & that really highlight what i love about hand knit garments. The South American wools I source are so much a part of Good Night Day's aesthetic, there is such attention to tradition & heritage , with these wools from Peru, Uruguay & Argentina, which are spun & hand dyed in small batches.

You make each and every one of your garments by hand. How much time do you spend knitting each day?
Each & everyday I spend knitting, hours on end, I don't actually keep track. I even bring my knitting on the go, I love knitting outdoors especially, I usually have many projects happening at once & I have certain projects that are easy to bring along. If I am not knitting, I am still very hands on, with some other related task.  I feel honestly that I am in some way never not knitting, since everything is so incorporated in this element. What are some of the challenges of running your own label?
Honestly, this label was founded from a personal obsession & had nothing to do with the business side of things, so obviously this has always been my struggle. I am constantly facing the financial challenges, as well as a workload that is always too overwhelming . I am often sold out  due to these issues, & all of my financial investment is truly just what i put in myself, i have no investors, & it is all just me. Since, it is such a literal personal & emotional investment, it can be quite a struggle with my sense of self, & I constantly just keeping my head above water sometimes. Of course, all of this really drives me, & I am keenly aware of sticking to my own integrity since I am my own boss., so that feels like an accomplishment, that I've been able to stick all out. I have such respect for anyone doing it on their own & their way. I hope to continue to meet other independent makers that are willing to share & support, its what I think makes it all happen for all of us.

Tell us about your ‘seamless knitting’ technique…
When I first started to knit, i was really intimidated & annoyed with tedious tasks of seaming, & many projects would be left unfinished due to the piecing together. Instead, I discovered I could design my own patterns in a way, that allowed me to avoid these hang-ups . I've passed these ideas of seamless knitting involving circular knitting patterns, I think they are a great tool especially for beginner knitters, & I feel it really helps in those early stages of learning when everything might seem so complicated. Of course, over time, I have found new appreciation for all aspects of knitting, including the more daunting techniques. But I still love a good seamless design, without all the fuss, there is something empowering about it all.

You also produced limited-edition knitting booklets, so that people can recreate GND designs in their own homes. How does it feel to see people making your garments?
although knitting is really a solitary activity & skill, & one that i personally crave sometimes for its ability to alleviate my own anxieties, stress & worries. I have really become aware of  the community of knitters, that really supports, encourages & inspires each other. I am so touched in an overwhelming way by the knitters that have reached out to me, & that use my patterns & pass on the love of knitting to their friends & family too. There is nothing as rewarding as hearing that my patterns inspired someone to learn to knit, because knitting empowers me & I know the positive effect it can continue to have. It was always really important that I self-publish the knitting patterns in booklets, as well as downloadable pdfs,  that would be easily accessible, & also share my passion for the printed word. Knitting can be for everyone.

What are your hopes and plans for the future of Good Night, Day?
I have so many hopes & plans for Good Night, Day, that I suppose I just aspire to see
most of them become a reality. I would love to continue to work alongside others in this community, to continue to stick to my own vision & to figure out how to expand in a way to make it works alongside my personally invested  hands on approach. I would love to focus even more on limited  & exclusive projects, while also having more specialty supplies for the makers.

knit it yourself (guilty of coveting, moodboard no.2)

although i knit all year round, fall is when i literally knit all of the damn time...& when you might realize to yourself that those aren't going to knit themselves in time for snow or for the holiday gifts you have in mind...

* just wanted to give a head's up that because the newest good night, day: modern & minimalist knitting, volume no.2 & the knitting booklet set w/ hand dyed mini tote sold out so very quickly (thanks you guys!), i will be putting up another pre-sale so that you can guarantee yourself a last chance opportunity before the next printing, which will be in less than a couple weeks.

& since i'm addicted to making these of all the guilty lovely items i am coveting...

introducing "good night day: modern & minimalist knitting patterns" booklet

i really couldn't wait to share my news, the "good night day: modern & minimalist knitting patterns" booklet  is now available and you can  purchase a copy of the first edition, limited of 50 numbered booklets.

i approached this  project knowing it would be for beginners (because i believe everyone can learn how to knit- really), as well as for advanced knitters (w/ further customisations tips offered at the end of the patterns). it is important to me that the patterns are given in this booklet form (rather than a less personal pdf). i like the idea of the collected patterns as a  booklet,as a lover of books myself, it was important & natural that i share my patterns in this format.

"As a self-taught knitter, i quickly found i was  incredibly inspired   to design my own patterns that were modern, minimilist & unique handmade pieces. I discovered that i could challenge myself to  design  patterns that were  thoughtful and innovative without all the hang-ups of traditional knitting, pieces did not involve time consuming finsishings, piecing together and those tedious seams.
The good night, day patterns in this booklet are all cleverly designed to be knit in one seamless piece or in sections that can be easily pieced together without seaming, using a range of straight forward knitting techniques and apt tools." from the booklet's intro, "why seamless knitting?"

knitting factory aka made at home

although, its our small bedroom that really has turned into my own knitting factory, & i never let anyone really in there, because its my chaotic mess of wool, that is all organized as makes sense to me. the rest of our space does tend to also collect pieces & remnants of my knitting, including, from top, displaying new to me postcards for the shop (especially for city of craft, so i won't run out, as usual), tagging & packaging, from below, throughout the day, orders to be packed & already packed orders stuffed in totes to go (that gorgeous lace screened tote is c/o mon petit fantome, & the other is my very own, just a very few left in the shop now), &  our kitty mable who never ever bothers w/ my wool balls (strange i know), some  samples for ny!!! (of argentina wool), on jason lee's day off i put him to work wrapping up orders & rolling up wool balls for me... (ps. you might think we have a pretty tidy place, you'd be mistaken)

sneak peeks: on the needles

spring sneak peek

sometimes its more difficult than other times to get focused & just knit, sometimes knitting is about the very last thing i want to even think about lately, but i'm hanging in there, somethings gotta give (i haven't missed a day of knitting yet).  it's been the anticipation of spring weather, that is getting me excited to knit new things. so i've already decided the pieces in my head that i'd really like to be designing, make patterns for , get onto the needles , & keep my fingers crossed. i thought it might be more an kick in the ass for me if i posted some of the diy process of all this thankless handmade business. so, thought i would post some pics, & take more as new knits on needles comes up, & they will. hope this won't be too dull, & apologizes for my dying camera.

still on the needles, still in the design tweaking process as well, & this is the second attempt, it always is frustrating in the beginning when trying to get a pattern just right, i'ii be re-knitting this bra/halter too, perhaps with a  longer ribbing, & perhaps i will have two versions, one with button closures, we'll see. (of course the cup size is too teeny even for me)
can't you just picture this merino nude verveine halter bra with a vintage sheer blouse unbuttoned & knotted at the waist, paired with some high waisted slacks?
& incase you might be wondering why not knit in cotton, well i thought cotton too at first, btu cotton has no stretch memory, & cotton sags & gets very quickly out of shape once wet, ect, & so merino is the very best way to go, & super soft next tot he skin... everyone is worth some merino wool from Uruguay

spring sneak peek

it's going to be a cropped sweater, perfect over a blouse or on its own too of course!
the wool is knit with the most amazing thick & thin spun alpaca too!
this is coming off the needles, to be re-worked too, but it is very close to what i envisioned, damn math & figuring out my gauge gets me everytime...

spring sneek peek wools & hues
sneak peek of the textures & hues & wools:
